ECUADOR/GALAPAGOS MISSION TRIP 2015

After being absent from the blogging world for over a month, I am finally getting around to sharing about my extraordinary time serving in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands this summer (more to come about what I've been up to soon!)

Last summer, I had the opportunity to travel with Never the Same Missions, an organization based in Tulsa, to Costa Rica for two weeks (read about it here). Encountering Jesus' radical love for me and His children in a new way, I returned home truly never the same. My passion for missions flourished and I began to look forward to my second trip with NTS.

As always, the Lord provides. I soon had raised enough money and was on my way for training in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I arrived absolutely stoked and ready to see how God was going to work over the course of the next three weeks! I was put on a team with almost all of my old friends and ready to turn the strangers into new ones. What a sweet reunion it was to be with people so dear to my heart that I hadn't seen in a year.

Lizzie and I
Over the course of our three days of training, we had team meetings, FUAGNEMs (services with worship and speakers), many trips to Starbucks, and drama training. Lots and lots of drama training.

Our organization uses a drama called 'Spellbound: Toymaker and Son' for our main ministry. Spellbound is a drama which portrays the Gospel through many unique characters and costumes that is family friendly and breaks through the language barrier. Each student on our team is cast a role the first night we arrive in Florida, and this year I received the part of the Spanish dancer who represents Mary.

I was also one of three students who was asked to speak on youth night in Florida during one of our FUAGNEMs this year!! You can listen to my speech on forgiveness here:

Following that evening's service, I hopped on a red-eye flight with a group of 20 other Galapagoers and flew directly to Quito, Ecuador. This is when the adventure really began!!

I would be lying if I said there weren't a couple bumps in the road along the way. Because of another group's flight complications, a couple of our soundboxes did not show up until a few days after being in Quito. However, we made it work and headed out for ministry the day after everyone had safely arrived and checked in.

Pope Francis also happened to be in Ecuador for his South America tour at the exact same time as our group; Quito being one of the cities he stayed in. Several Ecuadorians were confused, believing our sole purpose for visiting their country was to see the Pope like thousands of others who had migrated there to do the same. It was interesting to see their reaction when we explained why we were there and how God had divinely placed the both of us there at the same time.

We began day one of ministry by performing the drama in a huge park on a street corner across from our hotel.  Playing games with children, conversing with people on the sidewalks, and dancing around in our ridiculous costumes caught the eyes of many, and soon we had our first audience.

This year's ministry had a bit more variety than last year's. On our third ministry day, we partnered with a local church to help out with work projects where we painted walls, scrubbed floors, and cleaned bathrooms. After finishing at the church in the morning, we traveled down the road to another park to perform the drama. It was here that I had the privilege of leading a young mother named Jessica to Christ!

On day four, we traveled to a church where we put on a VBS for kids and colored pictures, blew bubbles, passed out stickers, made balloon animals, and shared laughter together. Our group took a little field trip with the children, which included hiking up a steep hill that dropped into a beautiful valley and revealed a large, open space to play soccer. After loving on the kids some more, we performed the drama again.

Day six's ministry was one of my favorites. Our group traveled two hours to Otavalo, home of the largest outdoor market in South America. On our way there, we stopped at a rural church to aid in their VBS program. First, we shopped around at the market to buy all of our souvenirs. After all of our purchases were made, we began weaving through the market and inviting people to watch the drama later that afternoon. The church we had visited earlier that day brought the kids to watch us perform there! It was the most unique place I have performed the drama over the past two years and a great place for ministry at that. After the drama concluded, the children flocked around us and piled onto our laps to listen to what our team leader had to say about God's love for them.

During our time in Quito, there were two optional excursion days to go white water rafting/ziplining and visit the Equator. I chose to visit the Center of the Earth and take the other day off since I had done the other two activities in Costa Rica last year. It was so surreal!!! There was also an array of shops and restaurants that we visited after taking photos on the famous yellow line.

One of our FUAGNEMs was designated as the annual 'Talent Only A Mother Could Love' show. Basically, students, LITs, or leaders can perform their "talent" of any kind, which is usually a joke and not supposed to be a legit talent at all. This year I went for it and decided to enter with a few of my friends, leading a pretend Zumba class! We received second place to the boys on our team who danced to 'Apache.' Their win was well deserved :)

Probably the most impactful experience I had in Quito was my baptism! I was baptized/dedicated as a baby in the Methodist church, but we don't attend there anymore. I also wanted it to be a personal decision I made for myself when I was more mature and confident in my faith. It was so worth the wait! Before the actual baptism, my two closest friends Kassidy and Lizzie, read my testimony. It was an incredibly holy and special moment to be surrounded by some of my favorite people for this event. What teenage girl can say she was baptized in a hot tub in Quito, Ecuador?!

It was incredibly bittersweet when the first flight group made their departure. Some friends were continuing on with me to the Galapagos, while others were returning home. It would be another year until I saw some of them again. Many tears were shed, many hugs were given, and many plans were made for the future.

While the goodbyes were difficult, that didn't stop my excitement from arriving and reality began to hit that we were actually traveling to the GALAPAGOS ISLANDS! Our flight there was short and soon we landed on the island of Baltra. Next, we loaded onto a boat to Santa Cruz, the island where we were staying. Our hotel was seven floors high, had hammocks in the lobby, and delicious empanadas were sold right next door.

Each day spent in the Galapagos was structured almost the same. We woke up and were presented with an amazing breakfast of coffee, freshly-squeezed orange juice, scrambled eggs (that weren't runny, which is typical of Central/South America) and homemade rolls. We then started ministry by visiting a school and performing the drama. The kids were so sweet and open to what we had to say. It was awesome to witness the children listen about Jesus with enthusiasm, some hearing about Him for the first time.

Our afternoons were spent being tourists and visiting the national park, a few beaches, local shops and restaurants, including a froyo place (which we discovered had the best WiFi on the island.) Then, we geared up for evening ministry. There's a neat park by the dock with a stage where a lot of teenagers, families, and tourists go to hang out. Here, we set up camp and performed the Spellbound drama and the Everything Skit. We also spent a few nights having worship on the dock. People in the Galapagos weren't necessarily as hungry to hear the message we had to spread, but many seeds were planted and I'm thankful for the hearts we did get to touch during the time we spent there. There was a team of about fifteen who traveled on to India after the Galapagos for three more weeks! From the pictures I've seen and the stories I've heard, it was a once in-a-lifetime experience and God worked in big ways.

Overall, these three weeks were full of adventure and personal growth. I'm so grateful for the opportunities God has granted me with and I hope to continue to pursue His plan for me. With that being said, I am praying about traveling to Haiti with Never the Same again next summer. Yay!

Thank you for reading about my travels and how God has worked in my life. I'd love to hear about what He's doing in yours.

California Vacation 2014

Hey all! It's time for me to sit down and tell you about my last summer adventure. My dad won a trip earlier this summer to Costa Rica (you can read about it here) He also won a trip to Orange County, California!! So on August 4, we packed our bags and were on our way to the golden state.

I have always dreamed of visiting California (who hasn't?!) The Christy Miller book series takes place in Newport Beach, one of my favorite Hawk Nelson songs is called "California", Disneyland, the beach - let's face it, all of my favorite things were pointing me here. It definitely wasn't a disappointment!!!

Because of all my recent travels this summer, getting on an airplane felt like a normal routine. I still get a thrill when the plane takes off and I get to see God's gorgeous creation from 30,000 feet in the air.

Airport shenanigans
We made it to our hotel at about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. The first thing we did was go to the beach. The waves were pretty crazy and we were told it was because of the hurricane in Hawaii. Being the clumsy girl that I am, I was taken under the waves several times and ended up with a bloody nose within the first 20 minutes of swimming. Typical Paige...

Being in the ocean wears you out, so you can imagine how delighted I was when we came back to a huge catered dinner for the Allstate agents. For breakfast and lunch each day we had tables set up for us with gobs of food. Soups, breads, fruits and veggies, meats, omlets, desserts, any food you can imagine! After stuffing ourselves with clam chowder and chocolate cake, we all showered and went to bed.

The next morning after breakfast we took a trolley and headed into Laguna Beach. The shopping was amazing! I managed to get a pair of crazy pants, some wall art and a bag full of saltwater taffy. I think more than anything I just loved the character of the town (In case you were wondering, it's nothing like the MTV show Laguna Beach).

We went down to the actual beach in the afternoon to swim some more and yes, I got my second bloody nose of the trip. While we were swimming, Emma and I met two brothers from the San Francisco area who were really fun to hang around. The coolest part was that they were Christians! We were able to have a great discussion about high school and our faith. There's such a connection Christians have with each other that I think is amazing, even if you've just met. We're all a big family as children of God and brothers and sisters in Christ!!!!!

That evening, my parents had an Allstate dinner for adults only so Emma and I grabbed dinner in the hotel and settled down for a fun evening of Netflix. My lucky mom and dad got to see Aerosmith in concert! Although I joked with them about being jealous, they do so much for me and I'm happy they were able to experience that together.

While my parents were busy being beautiful people...

Emma and I were busy being silly

Wednesday morning was an early one, but we had traffic to beat...we were Disneyland bound!

Guys, I am a Disney freak.

You have no idea.

And my love for Disney has never been stronger than it is now.

I went to Disneyworld when I was six, but haven't been back to a Disney resort since. So needless to say, I was pumped.

Getting into the park around 10:30ish, I felt like a kid in a candy store. I couldn't stop smiling! First, we went to pick up a FastPass and ride Splash Mountain. That was probably my favorite ride!!

We walked through all of the areas of the park and I can't even remember everything we saw! I was able to buy a Chip teacup (Beauty and the Beast) for my collection. Then, we rode the Peter Pan ride, Winnie the Pooh, It's a Small World (one of my favs), King Arthur's Carousel, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Haunted Mansion. Let me tell you, that one was an experience! I can't handle scary movies, I don't like Halloween and that proved I cannot even handle a "scary" Disney ride that five-year-olds were loving. Don't believe me? I was singing hymns the whole ride ;)

We were also able to walk inside of Sleeping Beauty's Castle and Tarzan's Treehouse. Finishing off the perfect day with a bang, we watched the beautiful fireworks while sipping our Starbucks. I am truly blessed.

Thursday was our most laid back day. My dad played golf with his work friends in the morning while Emma and I took surfing lessons at Laguna Beach! Our instructor named Mr. Goff was one of the most rad people I've ever met! He definitely looked like a surfer. Goff was extremely encouraging but pushed you at the same time. Our lesson was for two hours and we both managed to stand up on our boards and ride a few waves to shore! I love surfing and hope to do it again.

Later that evening we had a dinner cruise that Allstate put on for all of the agents and their guests. Did I mention it was on a yacht? The food was fabulous and it was so fun to experience an evening on the water, it's not really everyday that we go boating on yachts ;)

I fell in love with California and have yet again left a piece of my heart somewhere else on this planet. I am amazed at the incredible summer I've had and all of the opportunities The Lord has given me. Summer 2014 is one I will never forget, and I can't wait to see what is in store for me this fall.

COSTA RICA MISSION TRIP 2014

HELLO ALL! I have returned from my mission trip to Costa Rica and can't wait to tell all about it!! Let me just give a little background for those of you who don't know about my trip.

I heard about Never the Same Missions from Sisterhood, a Christian teen girl's magazine (it's awesome by the way, you should check it out!) Never the Same is a combined partnership of Susie Shellenberger Ministries and Big World Ventures. I wanted to go to Peru in 2013 but my parents were not ready for that. After patiently praying, NTS announced their trip for the summer of 2014: Costa Rica! My dad is an Allstate agent and it just so happens he won a trip to Costa Rica that same summer. My parents decided it was God telling them to let me go. I started fundraising in October by sending out support letters and raised all my money by December! The support from everyone was overwhelming and I can't thank them enough. The trip was to San José, Costa Rica and I would be gone for two weeks. It was my first mission trip and I couldn't wait to see what God was about to do.

I arrived in Florida Monday evening. We had FUAGNEM (fired up and going nuts every minute, basically a worship service we have every night) and went on to drama casting. Each team performs the drama 'Spellbound'. My role in the drama was the princess. Over the next two days, we met with our teams to bond, share testimonies, and discuss what would be taking place in Costa Rica. We also had drama training for about seven hours each day, depending on which role you were assigned. My favorite part about staying in Florida was forming relationships with my teammates. I stayed in a suite with five other awesome girls and I loved getting to know them better!! I had no idea those girls and others on my team would soon become my best friends.

My flight group was the last to arrive in Costa Rica and it was pretty late, but that didn't stop our excitement! The next morning we had our first ministry day. I was a little nervous because I wasn't sure what to expect. First, we went to a park and started playing music to attract attention. Several groups would break off with translators and knock on doors or invite people in the streets to the drama. Others stayed back and danced to a fun playlist with songs like 'Good Morning' and the 'Cha-cha slide'. Then we proceeded to perform the drama. Afterwards through a translator, one person would explain how the characters relate to the gospel. Another person would come forward and share their personal testimony. Then we would go talk to the people asking if they liked the drama, if they knew Christ and if they would like to accept Him and have a relationship. This became the routine for ministry days!!

Our first day was an eventful one. There were two drunk men at the first park we went to and one of them had been closely whispering things in my friend's ear which made her feel uncomfortable. We later found out they had been asking her for money. We had given them a card with information to the next place we would be visiting, a church. Somehow through their rough state of mind they followed us there which was a bit unsettling. The pastor did not want to let them in, but one of our leaders had a different idea. Vera has been going on trips with NTS for years and is an evangelism machine. She is not afraid to approach a stranger on the street and convince them they need Jesus in their heart. We fed the two men peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and by the end of the drama Vera and several others had helped them realize how much they need a Savior. They were tired of doing drugs and constantly drinking. Both men surrendered their lives to Christ that day.

The next day was the same routine, we performed the drama three times in two different parks. My friend Hallie and I handed out several bibles and played soccer with the kids.

Hallie and I
Sunday was a day of rest which was greatly appreciated. Some people from our team played soccer after FUAGNEM in the morning and swam in the pool. That evening we had a talent show; talent only a mother could love! Brothers Zach and Austin from our team stole the show with their interpretive dance and won. We were so blessed to have such funny guys on our team.

On Monday, we started going into the poor areas. We visited the slum of La Carpio and performed the drama in a preschool/church and two more times on the street. I shared my testimony in the morning which was a great experience! I was a little worried because I didn't feel that young children would be able to relate to depression, lack of self-confidence and suicidal issues but there were also some girls my age there and I hope it touched their hearts. Another fun part of that day was when it started pouring rain in the middle of the last drama. We were absolutely soaked but had a blast! I couldn't help but smile the entire time.

Wednesday was another day for excursions. This time I went white-water rafting! Even though I had to wake up at 4:45 am, I was all smiles the entire time. We were on the river for about four hours but I could've gone longer! The people in our boat made it the most fun. We chanted "U-S-A!" when we rowed and shouted "Jimmy!" when we passed a rapid. (Jimmy was our raft guide's name). By the time we got back to the hotel, all I wanted was a hot shower so I didn't participate in crazy hair night. Pedro, a leader on our team is a barber. He came up with some pretty awesome hairstyles! Pastor Jav also had an awesome sermon about God's biblical design for marriage that had my friends and I discussing it even after FUAGNEM.

Thursday was my favorite ministry day of the entire trip. We were back in La Carpio again helping with the medical clinic. Although we didn't personally help with the patients, most students from our team played with the children while their mothers were getting looked at by the staff. We also were able to provide a meal of rice and bread. I loved serving the food as I watched the same children come back for more five or six different times. While I was serving we didn't run out of food, there were actually leftovers which didn't seem possible. With God, all things are possible! At one point, we had finished serving food and were getting ready to perform the drama for the third and final time that day. We were dancing with the kids to the music and I started pretending to play the guitar. Soon, six young kids were doing the same thing! In that moment, everything was perfect. I looked around at the beautiful clouds and mountains in the distance, then at the poor run-down houses, then at all my amazing friends I had made, then into the faces of the laughing, happy children. That was when I knew this is what God was calling me to do. I had been praying for the Lord to reveal my purpose to me for a while, and I feel like that was His answer to me.

Friday was bittersweet as it was our last ministry day. We went to a park and then to a school where we thought was our last performance. After finding out we had been invited to a neighborhood to perform it again, everybody grumbled. It was extremely hot that day, but I think we were all glad to do it again one last time looking back. There was a lady there who was high and at first it was funny to watch her dance around and impersonate us. When we heard her story though, it was really depressing. Roxanne was her name, and she was one of the few people in her community to receive an education. She was a lawyer, but a tragedy had occurred in her life and she turned to drugs. Vera wasn't going to let this opportunity pass, and she started witnessing to Roxanne. As she described to us, at first Roxanne was having attitude and out of it as she should've been considering her mental state. All of the sudden, she was focused and listening to what Vera was saying. She accepted Jesus into her heart and took one of the little books we had for her. I'm not sure if she fully understood the commitment she had made, but the leaders reminded us it's our job to plant seeds and only God can do the rest.

Friday night was also guys night for our team. Guys night is when the boys on our team show how much they appreciate the girls. (It's supposed to be a surprise but I heard about it from a couple people in Florida.) After FUAGNEM, Zach escorted us to the room where we had team meetings. There was music in the background and fancy tables set up. We were given roses and served cake. Each guy gave a little speech they wrote and we finished the evening with a dance party. It was so sweet how much thought and effort they put into making the night special for us!!

Zach, Austin and I on guys night
Saturday was my favorite non-ministry day. I woke up early to go ziplining which was fun, but not as much fun as the last time I went in Costa Rica. After finishing there, we hopped back on our bus to visit the market! I love shopping to begin with, so shopping in a different country was even cooler. I was so excited to get all kinds of cool presents for my parents, friends and cousins back home.

Saturday evening was rough because we had to say our final goodbyes. Some flight group's lobby times were 3 am while others didn't leave until 2:30 pm. I was so incredibly blessed with my team and enjoyed getting to know every single person. Although many tears were shed and not everyone may come back next year, I know we will all get to have a reunion in heaven someday!

Team 4ever!
I ask for prayers as some of my friends traveled on the San Blas Islands, Panama for the extended trip and others who are going on the extended-extended trip to South Africa! May they continue to help further the Kingdom of the King of kings. I pray that everyone who went on this trip will not lose their passion for evangelism as we return home and resume our routines. Please begin praying for the trip next year as I will be traveling to Ecuador and going on the extended trip to the Galapagos Islands with NTS again!

I want more of You, God
I want more of You, God..."

Costa Rica: Round One! (Vacation)

One of my favorite parts of the summer is going on vacation! I absolutely love to travel and want to go EVERYWHERE. My outlook on it is God will protect you, and if something happens you just get to go visit him! ;)

My dad is an Allstate agent and if their agency does well throughout the year, they are rewarded trips. It just so happens that our vacation destination is the same place I will be going to for my mission trip! This year we traveled to Herradura, Costa Rica. We stayed at the Marriott Los Sueños Resort. It was beautiful!

The pools were definitely cooler than the beach, which was just lots of small rocks. Still beautiful though! They had hammocks scattered around the grounds along with a private beach. The view was breathtaking!!

We were also able to choose a couple excursions. The day after we arrived we went ocean paddling in the morning! That was probably my favorite part of the entire trip because of the guides, Wilbur and Andrés. We canoed around the peninsula and then snorkeled at a private beach.

Panorama I took of our private beach

Andrés, me and Wilbur!
The next day we woke up early again to go ziplining!! We rode on a tram and then zipped down on 10 different cables. I wasn't scared at all and rode hands-free almost the entire time :)

The rest of the vacation we relaxed by the pool. I had so much fun with my family in Costa Rica and I can't wait to go back!!!!!

Where are you going on your summer vacation?
